ABSTRACT

Background : The recent increasing concern about the medical ethics has resulted in many discussions on issues related to biomedical ethics. However, many other ethical issues that can be found in Korean hospital settings still tend to be ignored.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to understand the ethical problems occurred in hospital settings through analyzing situations experienced by nursing students.

Results : Nursing students encountered many situations where the human rights were violated. The ethical problems related to clients’ rights were as follows: interfered clients' privacy; not receiving sufficient information; clients' rights of life not bing respected; unfair nursing service; not receiving holistic care. The other problems were such as nurses not being respected by doctors and clients, and nursing students not being respected by nurses during their practice sessions. So nursing students experienced ethical conflicts and dilemmas.

Conclusion : This study showed that the medico-ethical vitality has to be recovered and the discussion on these issues needs to be done in a more comprehensive way.
