ABSTRACT

My critical discussion of using frozen embryo will focus on whether they might legitimately be treated differently from other kinds of embryos. I will try to show in the first section of the paper that the fact that they are surplus embryos cannot be a justifiable reason for using frozen embryos. In defending this point, I will adopt the strategy of approaching the problem by considering the following ideas; the freezing of the embryos, the creation of the embryos through IVF, and permitting IVF technology. I shall then proceed to the question of moral status of the embryo (frozen embryo), arguing that frozen embryos cannot be treated as entities whose legal and moral status are something like property or material possessions. If the main arguments in this paper are successful, then the following consideration might be said to hold: thawing frozen embryos cannot bridge the gaps between two extremists, liberal and conservative.
