ABSTRACT

This on-line survey was conducted to find out the Korean nurses' perceptions and attitudes toward the ethical problems. Structured questions were posted on Korean Nurses Association home page (http://www.koreanurse.or.kr). The self-administered questionnaire including 28 questions was developed from review of the literature and certification of 3 nurses and 1 health expert. The data were obtained from Oct. 2000 to May 2001 from 134 respondents and analysed by descriptive statistics and χ²-test that using other survey data in the literature.

The results of this study were as follows:

1. This collected data shows that nurses regard bribery as the most common ethical problem in health care practice. Other frequently mentioned problems are over-treatment/over-reimbursement and treatment refusal. It means that professional ethics are as serious among Korean nurses as biomedical issues themselves.

2. There are disagreements between Korean nurses and doctors on some ethical problem(bribery, over-treatment/over-reimbursement, doctors' strike, organ sale, euthanasia). Much of the respondents answered that selling a person's living organs for transplantation and active euthanasia should be allowed. It means that nurses tend to take a progressive position than doctors.
