ABSTRACT

The "Organ Transplantation Act” of Korea has been implemented and enforced since 9 February 2000 setting a legal foundation for safe and ethical organ transplantations without discrimination. However, the compliance is the responsibility of the medical, legal, and social communities to eradicate organ trade, to promote equality, and to render swift transplantations. It is particularly important to follow the stringent rules and regulations of decision-making processes stipulated in the Act to safeguard the dignity of potential "brain-death organ donors. These duties and obligations can only be satisfied with the strong ethical and moral standards of doctors, nurses, and other concerned medical authorities as well as public perspectives and awareness.
