ABSTRACT

The concept of personhood is central to the ethical issues surrounding embryonic research. The fundamental questions are “When does human life begin?” and “From which stage of development should the embryo be protected?” These questions cannot be answered merely through scientific research but instead require reasoned reflection and argumentation. In this article I argue that all human beings must be protected from the moment of conception. The protection of human life must not depend on value judgments or selection criteria such as stages of development or grades of humanity.
