ABSTRACT

Background : The relationship between patient and physician is at the heart of the process of good medical care, yet remains largely unmeasured and studied. We undertook a modified-qualitative study of patients’ self-reported experiences with trust in a physician to gain further understanding of the components of trust in the context of the patient-physician relationship.

Methods : We created an open-enrollment electronic survey of internet users who visited our home page. And We recorded the number of respondents, their demographics and their personal experiences with trust in patient-physician relationship. We categorized 201 cases in 9 trust-items developed by H. Thom David.

Result : In a 6-month period, 201 users completed the electronic questionnaire.

‘Communicating clearly and completely’ was the most important item in numerous positive experiences. ‘Thoroughly evaluating problems’ was the most prevalent item in numerous negative experiences. Most respondents feel trust with physicians who listen actively and explain their problems completely.

Conclusions : These specific examples and categories of physician behavior encompass the trust experiences provide insights into the process of trust information and suggest ways in which physicians could be more effective in building and maintaining trust.
